We are a bipartisan group of Michiganders working to reform our criminal justice system. Our goal is to gather enough signatures for a ballot measure that would allow Michiganders to establish a program where prisoners can earn time off their sentence for "good behavior". The measure would establish credits that prisoners could earn to reduce their sentences for efforts such as holding employment while in prison, participating in a training program, earning a college degree or educational certificate. This is a system of reform in place in most states across the country.
In 2021, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Michigan United assembled leaders and organizations across the State of Michigan to create a "Good Time" Strategy Table. This collaborative effort would research, write, and submit language for the "Good Time" Ballot Initiative. Good Time meetings were held to build out the core teams. Webinars were held every second Wednesday of the month.
In December of 2021, the Coalition submitted a proposal for a Good Time" Ballot Initiative to the State of Michigan Board of Canvassers. The Strategy Table appointed a Steering Committee that created The Liberty and Justice For All Coalition.org. The State of Michigan Board of Canvassers approved a retroactive Ballot Initiative to circulate and collect signatures for the "Good Time" Bill. Anyone incarcerated with an out-date qualifies to earn Good Time release credits for college classes and degrees, mental Illness, anger management, AA/NA,. skill trades and credits for being a veteran.
The Michigan Constitution provides: “The people reserve to themselves the power to propose laws and to enact and reject laws, called the initiative, and the power to approve or reject laws enacted by the legislature, called the referendum.”
Petition sponsors are strongly encouraged to gather and submit a significant number of signatures in excess of the minimum number required, due to the likelihood that some petition signer entries or whole petition sheets may be found invalid during the verification process.
